Things to consider when buying skis:

Types of Skis

• All Mountain.  Designed to perform in all types of snow conditions and at most speeds.  Also known as Mid-Fats and All Purpose.
• Powder.  Designed to float on powder, great for out west skiing.  Also known as Back-country or Big Mountain skis.
• Twin Tips.  Curved-up tail along with standard curved-up tip.  Designed for backwards take-offs and landing jumps back-wards.  Also function well as All Mountain skis.
• Racing.  Stiffer, longer and narrower skis designed strictly for racing.  Also known as Slalom or GS skis.

Skier Level

• Beginner.   First timers or only been skiing a few times.
• Advanced Beginner.  Comfortable on green runs and moving up to blue runs.
• Intermediate.  Confident and comfortable on groomed blue runs.
• Advanced Intermediate.  Moving up to black diamonds and other terrain.
• Advanced.  Black diamonds and other terrain.
• Expert.  All terrain including powder, out of bounds, moguls, etc. are skied with ease.

Consider buying skis one level up from your current level, allowing you to improve with your ski.  More advanced skis must be loaded up - you really need to get speed and weight into them to get them to carve.  If you cannot get the right speed and pressure, the skis will be difficult to control.

Ski Length

1. As a general rule of thumb, skis should reach to the chin for beginners, the nose for intermediates, and the forehead (and above) for advanced. Heavier skiers need a longer ski, lighter skiers need a shorter ski.

2. If you like to ski fast with wide turns, use longer skis.

3. If you enjoy quick, snappy turns and more control, go shorter.

4. If you’re undecided between two lengths, err on the shorter side.

Turning Radius

• The turn radius equals the  circle skis make on edge when weight is properly applied.
• Turn radius ranges from 11m to 25m.  If you want quick snappy turns, go for 16-22m turn radius.  If you prefer big, wide-open turns, go for a turn radius of 16-22m.
